A Beacon of Innovation and Resilience in Biotech’s Challenging Landscape
This article provides an overview of the recent grand opening of ChemPartner’s Boston R&D Center of Excellence, written for the broader global scientific community who may not have been able to join us in person. Our aim is to capture the spirit of the event, the insights shared, and the significance of this new space for biopharma research and collaboration.
Defying Uncertainty: ChemPartner’s Bold Investment in Biotech’s Future
In an era where the biotech industry grapples with funding slowdowns, valuation dips, and heightened uncertainty, ChemPartner stands tall as a pillar of progress. While many are scaling back, we’re boldly investing in the future-embedding ourselves in Boston’s world-renowned biotech corridor to empower drug developers with localized expertise, streamlined collaboration, and unwavering support. On September 10, 2025, we celebrated the grand opening of our state-of-the-art R&D Center of Excellence at 480 Arsenal Way in Watertown, Massachusetts.
This wasn’t just an event; it was a resounding declaration of confidence in science’s potential to transform lives. Held at the historic Commander’s Mansion, the day was a masterful blend of cultural grandeur, intellectual firepower, and forward-thinking vision, drawing global leaders, partners, and innovators who left inspired and energized.

The festivities kicked off with an elegant breakfast inside the Mansion’s magnificent halls. Guests – ranging from biotech executives and academic luminaries to investors and partners – mingled amid the aroma of fresh pastries and coffee, forging connections that set the tone for a day of collaboration. This informal start allowed for genuine introductions and conversations, highlighting ChemPartner’s commitment to building relationships that drive real innovation.
A Celebration Rooted in Culture and Connection: The Traditional Lion Dance
As the group transitioned outdoors, the air buzzed with anticipation for the traditional Chinese Lion Dance – a vibrant spectacle symbolizing prosperity, courage, and good fortune. Performed with bold colors, thundering drums, and spirited movements, the dance warded off challenges and invited blessings for our new venture.

The performance culminated in a dramatic scroll unrolling by our Chairman and CEO, William Woo, alongside Co-President Xingquan Ma, unveiling our mission to accelerate biopharma breakthroughs. This cultural highlight beautifully bridged ChemPartner’s Shanghai roots with Boston’s innovative spirit, reminding everyone that true progress honors heritage while embracing the future.
Visionary Leadership: Official Address and Ribbon-Cutting
Moving to the main outdoor venue, William Woo delivered a stirring official address. He emphasized ChemPartner’s strategic audacity: “In a time of industry uncertainty and rising R&D costs, we’re choosing to expand boldly in Boston – the center of life sciences innovation. We’re not just a service provider, we’re your trusted partner, committed to helping you bring life-changing therapies to patients faster.”

The address led seamlessly into the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, a symbolic milestone led by Woo, senior management, and distinguished guests. Joining them were our Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Jincai Lue, along with invited speakers and panelists such as Dr. Johnson YN Lau, Dr. Gene Petrella, and Dr. Art Taveras. This collective act marked ChemPartner’s deeper integration into the U.S. life sciences community, signaling our readiness to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our partners.
Keynote Inspiration: Sir Richard John Roberts
The day’s intellectual highlights began with our keynote speaker, Sir Richard John Roberts, the 1993 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine. As Chief Scientific Officer at New England Biolabs, Sir Richard captivated the audience with tales from his groundbreaking days discovering restriction enzymes, introns, and gene splicing alongside legends like Frederick Sanger and James Watson.

His message – that perseverance, curiosity, and unexpected discoveries fuel scientific triumphs – resonated deeply in today’s biotech climate, where resilience is key. “Many of science’s greatest breakthroughs come from following the data wherever it leads,” he shared, inspiring reflections on the serendipity of innovation.
An elegant lunch followed, featuring gourmet fare that encouraged further networking in the Mansion’s refined setting. Guests savored the opportunity to discuss emerging trends over exquisite dishes from a menu specially crafted for the occasion, featuring a blend of Shanghai and Boston flavors.
Expert Insights: Invited Speakers Dr. Johnson YN Lau and Dr. Gene Petrella
Post-lunch, the program continued with two powerhouse invited speakers. Dr. Johnson YN Lau, a physician-scientist with decades of academic and industry, delved into ” Global Pharma Industry – Future Directions.” He highlighted AI-driven R&D, personalized medicine, and sustainable pipelines, drawing from his pivotal role in developing antiviral therapies. His insights positioned ChemPartner as an “industry accelerator,” praising our ability to navigate global complexities.
Next, Dr. Gene Petrella, a serial entrepreneur, RNA delivery expert, and Novartis veteran, electrified the crowd with his talk on “The Unstoppable March Towards the RNA Frontier for Human Health and Medicine.” He explored RNA targeting, immuno-oncology, and therapeutic transformations, emphasizing biomarker-driven approaches and the need for bold execution in RNA-based innovations. Attendees hailed it as one of the most forward-looking perspectives on the horizon of medicine.
Forward-Thinking Dialogue: The Panel Discussion
After a brief break, the day shifted to an insightful panel discussion on the future of drug discovery. Moderated with expertise, the panel – featuring Dr. Lau, Dr. Petrella, and Dr. Art – tackled critical topics: How CROs like ChemPartner can stay ahead of scientific trends, evolve as the best partners for biopharma, and anticipate therapeutic shifts in areas like AI integration, biologics, and personalized therapies.

Taveras brought his deep expertise in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, sharing strategies for turning discoveries into impactful ventures. The dialogue was lively, sparking questions from the audience and reinforcing ChemPartner’s role in fostering such forward-thinking exchanges.
The event concluded with a sophisticated social mixer, complete with fine wines and delectable hors d’oeuvres. This relaxed finale allowed for deeper connections, roundtable chats, and toasts to future collaborations. Notable attendees included Henry Huang, Dean of the Accounting Department at Yeshiva University’s School of Business and Chairman of the Peking University Alumni Association in New York; independent directors from Nasdaq-listed companies; and Vice President Zhao Zhong, a world-leading investment expert. Their presence underscored the event’s prestige and ChemPartner’s global influence.
